Area Information
On January 2, 1786, Russell County was established from a section of Washington County. The County was named for Col. William Russell, who assisted in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. In 1790, the population of the County was 3338.
Russell County has grown over the years to become home for over 30,000 citizens who believe in a simpler more peaceful way of life.
The Russell County public school system operates approximatley 15 primary, middle and high schools. Area colleges and universities include SW VA Community College, Highlands Community College, King College, Emory and Henry College and Northeast State Technical College and East Tennessee State University.
Area employment opportunities include two relatively new IT companies employing nearly 800 people. AT&T employs 500 people and our school system employees nearly 700 people.
Area cultural opportunities include a local Bluegrass festival, an Arts Festival, the heart of Appalachia Orchestra, the Russell County Fair and Horse Show, Honaker Redbud Festival, Clinch River Days and the Highlands festival. For racing enthusiasts, the Bristol International Raceway hosts two NASCAR stockcar races.
